Public Works Director Mark Knesek said Highland households produce 154.9 tons of recycling per month. However, a good chunk of that paper, plastic and cardboard is unrecyclable. “Our Republic representative says we are not the worst when it comes to recycling but we’re certainly not the best — and that costs us money,” Knesek said. “I am calling on all residents to up your education on what we can recycle — and what we can’t.” It’s good for the environment and makes it pay to recycle again.

Now that warmer weather is upon us, Highland Police want to remind residents about bicycle rules and safety. Bicyclists are required to follow the same rules of the road as those driving vehicles: stop at stop signs and travel with traffic.
Bike riders are also strongly encouraged to:

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Equip bike with reflectors.
  • Utilize a headlight and taillight when riding in the dark.

For those operating vehicles on the roadways, please use caution when coming upon the bike trail crossings that intersect with many of our roads in Highland. We want everyone to enjoy the outdoors and to be safe while doing so.

The communitywide yard sale, sponsored by the Highland Community Events Commission, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, MAY 1 and Sunday, MAY 2. Want to participate? April showers bring May flowers — and thunderstorms, too! Six of the town’s parks — Sharp Athletic Complex, Main Square, Homestead, Sheppard, Markley and Meadows — are equipped with devices that activate a siren/strobe light when lightning is detected within 10 miles of town.
